More on Freedom

Recently, I shared what my client Kennan Burch (Founder of Dream Builders Network and Owner/Founder of Brand Catalyst Partners) had to say about living a life that is Free, Full, and Fearless.

In my last post, I presented some questions to consider on the subject of freedom.  In addition to these questions, Kennan believes there are at least three key points to consider if you wish to live a life of greater freedom:

1) You must want to be free.

This may sound like a cliché, but it is grounded in truth. Freedom comes at a price. One visit to Arlington Cemetery reminds us that freedom isn’t free. If you long to be free, you must be willing and able to pay the price.

Within your heart, there is a reason WHY you want greater freedom. When you fully understand that reason, something special happens…you’ll discover a drive that is almost unstoppable. Daniel Harkavy’s recent blog post on “Why” is a great place to start if you are seeking this understanding.

2) You must accept help to be free.

The pursuit of freedom is not a solo sport. It takes a team. When Lance Armstrong trains for a race, he may be on the bike alone…but he doesn’t train alone. He has a team to help him prepare.

You may have heard the term “pull yourself up by your own bootstraps.” Although it is true that you have to draw from inner strength in order to improve, success in any endeavor is very seldom achieved alone. Freedom does not mean isolation. Find someone who can help, ask for their help, accept it, and be thankful.

3) You must continually pursue freedom to remain free.

Consider a person who is drowning in debt. What would happen if someone came along and paid off their debt? They would feel an instant sense of freedom from their debt… but what would happen next?

Without a monumental shift in their thinking, they would very likely continue to do what they did before which created the debt in the first place. Ultimately, they would be right back where they started.

If you truly want to be free, and you seek help to pursue that freedom, you’ll probably find it. You may be tempted to sit back and shout “free at last!” But whatever it is that is restricting your freedom today will not vanish. If you embrace this third principle — to continually pursue freedom – then you will view freedom as a way of life rather than a final destination.

Which of these three principles is the most difficult for you today? What steps will you take to move toward greater freedom in your life or business?

Next week, I will continue this series as I examine what it means to live a life that is Full.
